English Language Development

If a student's native language is other than English, then that student may qualify to receive ELD. Arco Iris provides ELD through a pull-out model. Students receive daily targeted English language instruction to develop speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills. Students also receive Sheltered Instruction inside their classrooms.

Topics include structuring student interaction; emphasizing listening and speaking to build reading and writing; explicitly teaching English vocabulary, syntax, grammar, functions, and conventions; integrating meaning and communication; providing corrective feedback on form; implementing communication and language-learning strategies; emphasizing academic language acquisition; and basing instruction on specific language objectives.
