Where Are They Now: Alumni & The 2022 Mary Taylor Arco Iris Scholarship Winner Zachary Jarvis

Whether he was learning Spanish songs like “Vivir Mi Vida” or attending our annual Dia de los Muertos festivities, Zachary (Zach) Jarvis has fond memories of his time at Arco Iris Spanish Immersion School, our tuition-free K-5th grade, in Beaverton, Oregon. In 2022 Zach was awarded the Mary Taylor Arco Iris Scholarship that he applied to college education.

Mary Taylor is one of the founders of Arco Iris Spanish Immersion School and was galvanized into action after the senseless death of George Floyd in 2020. She initiated these scholarships to support students overcoming adversity and obstacles who have good grades, but need financial assistance to pursue their dreams of college. This complements our school's mission offering rigorous education for students, including those who are historically underserved.

More details about the scholarship:

- It grants $1,000 to three graduating Oregon high school seniors who meet the selection criteria.

- Applicants must have a 3.5 GPA and preference is given to students who have overcome obstacles or have diverse backgrounds.

- Students must show financial need (via a FAFSA) and be first generation college students.

- Students who have attended Arco Iris and meet eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply but are not guaranteed a scholarship.

Back to Zach. We caught up with him and asked him a few things about his time at Arco Iris and what he’s up to now!

How did Arco Iris prepare you for your life today?

Teaching me Spanish and learning about cultural differences which helped shape my perspective.

Do you still use your Spanish skills today?

Spanish has helped me interact with the Hispanic demographic where I live. I am able to have conversations with those who do not speak English.

How did Arco Iris shape your perspective in life?

Arco Iris has helped me to learn about different cultures and their values. This has changed my perspective by seeing how others may look and tackle problems.

Who was a strong influence at Arco?

Ms. Vega who taught Spanish. She taught us a lot about Puerto Rico and also taught us “Bailando” by Enrique Iglesias and “Vivir mi Vida” by Marc Anthony.

How did the Mary Taylor Arco Iris Scholarship help you?

The scholarship has helped me afford college by paying for some of my tuition.

What are you doing now?

I’m studying mechanical engineering at Oregon State University. I am graduating in December and planning to work in the automotive industry.

Fun facts about Zach
