Creating Diverse Meal plans

We have been studying nutrients and MyPlate.  Please work with your child to create three meal plans, using MyPlate as your guide.  Your child may either draw a picture of the meals. labeling the foods (in Spanish), or cut out from a grocery store ads.  Each meal needs to have at least one food from each group.  Meat or other items from that group need to be included in two meals only.  Since most of the fat we need is found in foods like meat and dairy, you will not need to add oil to your meal plans.  Choose one meal to prepare with your child.

You may use the back of the paper that will be sent home for your meal plans, or attach an additional piece of paper if you need more room.  Thank you!

More nutrients, please!

Please help your child list the foods eaten for one day and check if the food was rich in carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, water, or if you are unsure.  Remember, a food can contain many nutrients.  For example, macaroni and cheese has carbohydrates (noodles), protein (milk and cheese), fat (milk and cheese), and minerals (milk and cheese).  On the worksheet I will send home, check the main nutrients you and your child think are found in each food.  Return the completed survey to class on 1/13/2017.

Community safety problems and solutions.

Objective: To work with family to design solutions to community safety problems.

With an adult in your family, take a car or bus ride, or walk through the community. Use the chart (Maestra will send home a copy) as a guide of what to look for on your trip and to record your findings. For example. if there is litter in the street, record where and what type - glass, paper, dangerous substance, etc.  There is also a space for a proposed solution. When the chart is completed, work with a family member to write a letter to the mayor describing the problems you have seen that puts community members in danger.  The letter should also include a suggested solution.  Bring letter and chart to school.
