English Language Development (ELD)

English Language Development

If a student's native language is one other than English, then that student may qualify to receive ELD services. Arco Iris provides ELD through pull-out,  co-teaching, and consultancy models.   In pull-out, students leave the classroom to work in a small group with the ELD teacher.  In co-teaching, the ELD teacher goes into the classroom and works with ELD students.  With consultancy, the ELD teacher works with the classroom teacher to help them provide services to the student.  In any case, students receive  targeted English language instruction to develop speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills.

Instruction is tailored to the students' current level of English acquisition and may include structured student interaction;  using listening and speaking skills to improve reading and writing; explicitly teaching English vocabulary, syntax, grammar, functions, and conventions; integrating meaning and communication; providing corrective feedback on form; implementing communication and language-learning strategies; emphasizing academic language acquisition; and basing instruction on specific language objectives.
