In third grade I meet with students for 75 minutes a day, and 60 minutes on Wednesdays to deliver English language instruction. I am developing my curriculum based on the Oregon Common Core State Standards and your child's individual reading and writing needs. I will be teaching essential skills and strategies in both reading and writing, working with students to provide instruction based on assessment results both formal and informal. I will work to provide opportunities for students to apply reading/writing skills and strategies using meaningful texts. This will occur within the weekly time frame that is allotted for ELA at Arco Iris School.
The reading curriculum will cover the foundational skills of phonics, word recognition, vocabulary building and fluency. Students will be exposed to a range of texts and tasks in literature covering different genres. As well as getting opportunities to read various fiction and non-fiction/informational texts.
In writing I will be working with students to gain adequate mastery of a range of writing skills. They will learn about the 3 major different types of writing; opinion, informative/explanatory and narrative. The goal is that students will learn about the different aspects of language use, from syntax, word meaning (vocabulary) and the development of their ideas. We work daily on the convention of standard English grammar and usage when writing, Along with capitalization, punctuation and spelling in student writing. Throughout the year students will have the opportunity to plan, revise, edit and share their writing with others. I will adjust my planning and the curriculum as based on the academic needs of my students.
I am looking forward to a great year working with your students! If you have any questions or concerns regarding ELA class please get in touch with me.
