At Arco Iris, we believe that daily class attendance is an essential component to a student’s academic success. We are committed to student achievement. We really count on children being in school every day as it is important to their learning and academic achievement. This also impacts their ability to create positive social connections. This also affects Arco Iris’ funding and budget.
In the event that your student becomes ill or injured, please call our School Office at (503) 473-0416, or email email@example.com before the school day is over to excuse the absence.
Pursuant to Oregon Revise Statue 339.010 School attendance required; age limits. Except as provided in ORS 339.030, all children between the ages of 7 and 18 years who have not completed the 12th grade are required to attend regularly a public full-time school of the school district in which the child resides. [Amended by 1965 c.100 §274]
• Notification –When notifying the school regarding a student absence, a parent or legal guardian must call the School Office or provide an email upon the student's return. Messages or emails must detail the nature of the absence or run the risk of the absence being designated as unexcused. Parents or legal guardians have no more than one school day (carry over the weekend/non-student days when applicable) to excuse an absence. All absences will be designated as unexcused, regardless of reason after one school day. Only individuals on the guardian contact list are authorized to excuse a student. Students will not be excused if they call in for themselves.
Pursuant to Oregon Revised Statute 339.065 Estimates of attendance (1) In estimating regular attendance for purposes of the compulsory attendance provisions of ORS the principal or teacher shall consider all unexcused absences. Eight unexcused one-half day absences in any four-week period during which the school is in session shall be considered irregular attendance. (2)An absence may be excused by a principal or teacher if the absence is caused by the pupil’s sickness, by the sickness of some member of the pupil’s family or by an emergency. A principal or teacher may also excuse absences for other reasons where satisfactory arrangements are made in advance of the absence. (3)Any pupil may be excused from attendance by the district school board for a period not to exceed five days in a term of three months or not to exceed 10 days in any term of at least six months. Any such excuse shall be in writing directed to the principal of the school which the pupil attends. [1965 c.100 §281; 1973 c.728 §4; 1987 c.158 §57; 1993 c.45 §114]
• Excused Absences– Emergencies will be classified as infrequent situations of major importance that affect family and home. Absences may also be considered excused for medical and dental appointments, legal/court obligations, bereavement, religious observations and school sponsored activities. Absences which do not meet these criteria will NOT be excused, even if the absence is reported by a parent or guardian.
The expectation of Arco Iris School is that all students are in their classrooms, ready to learn at 8:30 am. If a student arrives to the school building by 8:30 am, they are considered tardy. Your student will be provided with a late pass issued by the main office or volunteer designee. As a consequence of excessive tardies, the student will be referred to attendance team and parents will be notified for a meeting with the attendance team for further guidance (Attendance team is comprised of the school counselor and attendance secretary).
• Make-up Work -Make-up work for excused absences should be completed during the timeframe agreed upon by the teacher and student. To request missed work for long periods, please email or contact teachers. Please also visit the teachers’ website for updates in this link http://www.arcoirisschool.org/apps/staff/
